Why joint or why not joint a photo competition
Are you also so frustrated never win an photo competition? don’t give up go for it if you think you take the best shot ever.
But really be honest after the winner is announced and you are not among the winners and it is not the first time you not the winner you are frustrated again.
I remember my first award a 5th price it was, I was 17 years old and the photo I made was with a classic kodak click camera which I got a few years before for my 14th birthday
The photo contest was organized by a local photo club in town, their were around 500 participants on the competition.
The second time I won an award was for a nationwide festival with more than 2000 participants and I got the first price and the price was a free flight ticket to a country of my choice.
Its almost impossible to win an award nowadays
One reason is the number of participants who join a photo contests and the hight quality of participant photographers.
(note: The organizers of the Sony World Photography Awards 2017, the world’s largest photography competition, have In total, 227,596 photographs were taken by photographers from 183 countries : (source WPO Sony)
Almost an impossible task for the jurors to stay objective I assume
Well I never won a Sony wpo photo award even not a honorable mention.
That doesn’t mean I stop trying every year again its free so always try and try again it also inspire you to upgrade your level as a photographer.
Be aware which photo contest you like to participate
Photo competitions can be lucrative business because if it is not for free most of the time and therefore their is a lot of rubbish on the market 20$ for a single picture 30$ for series to allow to join a contest is not an uncommon fee.
for example with an estimate of 40.000 participants which is not rare nowadays with a of fee $30 = 1.2 mln and with all photos which they can use freely according the contract its is a quite a capital
If you pay your fee your not only pay for the costs of the award organization will endure
you also pay for the winners money prices
You better find a free fee brand related photo contest organization like in my case is the wpo sony award and Nikon however its organized by the camera brand every camera can participate.
And if you wanna pay for a photo contest choose a prestigious serious one for example the PX3 Paris and the LUCIE award.
In one of my earlier post I mentioned that I travel often for special events or festivals and before I leave for my trip I collect information about that special local event or festival.
One of the places I like to visit is Bali.
Bali is more than Kuta beach, sand sea, bars and tourists places.
Bali has so much more specially for the photographer beside that it has great nature and it has events which the tourists public not aware off.
One of the events is the Makepung buffalo races at the district the residency of Jembrana at West Bali.
Started in July there are approximately seven different circuits spread out in various locations throughout the district. The Sangyang Cerik circuit in the village of Tuwed, Melaya district is one of the main circuits. The other dedicated fields-turned-circuits include Delod Berawah, Kaliakah, Pangkung Dalem, Merta Sari, Tuwed and Awen.
On the eve of the finals in November there is a gathering among the racing teams called sekaa makepung with the Jembrana regent. The evening is as festive as the major racing day that follows, being filled with art performances and public entertainment.
I had to get up 5:00 in the morning and after 2.5 hour drive started from my hotel from Kuta I arrive at the place where the Bull races would started.
My photo gear which I bring with me was the Nikon 810, Zoom lens 28-300 mm and my tele lens 200-500 and stuck on this tele lens belongs the one pod which afterward I excualy didn’t need because security told my I was not allow to bring the one pod to the arena because it could scared the buffalo.
The buffalo’s the most friendly animals there is, they are so relaxed that even treat them badly they take them by themselves it seems.
Years the Indonesian buffalo the karbouw in Indonesian language was the working horse in the rice-field but it has now taken over by machines which does its work nowadays in the rice field not only that it also took away the romantic view from the rice-field for the photographer but how much I was looking for in Bali for that romantic look, it seems that the karbauw in the rice fields are gone for ever.
What happened to al those buffalos without a job, thousands of buffaloes got unemployed and taken over by stinking diesel machines.
Where are all those buffalos gone to?
I saw lot of them probably on the racing tracks in Jembrana that day.
How much excited I was that day shooting my images and how much I enjoy that day being there
But one thing really shocked me and that was the use (see my album ) of sticks with spikes to beat the buffalo’s to get the buffalo’s running
After that day with more than thousands shots at my sd card, I went back with hat feeling of excitement but with a strange and sad feeling as well.
Asking myself will this the begin of the extinction of the Indonesian Karbouw or thanks to the tradition of buffalo races are able to keep his existence.
Probably I shoot more than 100.000s. Since I started as a photographer I don’t know I lost control over it. I also have a lot photos from the old school on Celluloid in my archive which I should digitalize but I have no time for it, or maybe if I am gone forever, somebody else who interested of my work and they will take care of it till the next generation.
I am personally not so good at bookkeeping my files very well. I put some on social media but all in low resolution. Because you never know who is going to missed use your work like people who have no respect for artistic property, but you like to have liked from the public. Well, you can find my work all over the internet just Googling my name: Frederik Enneman and you see a lot of my work which probably are illegally miss-used without my permission.
Yes… there are success stories about photographers with more than 10.000 till 100.000s followers and making money because of it. Their pages are attracting advertisers and paying them for advertising on their page.
Like the most of us are not that lucky it has to do with the first day you started show yourself on the internet, how often you see others nice picture than yours getting so many likes and you only a few. Don’t worry about it. It takes some time you have to build up your network, it may take time for a couple of years. Don’t give up. Anyway, let us talk about stock-photography.
Stock-photography is also where you can store your photos and earn some extra few bucks.
If you think you can make a living from it you got my blessing but the competition is killing the stock photography business. The shutter stock for example where I contribute my images has more than 200 mil images in their stock files. The chance that one of your images is chosen could be like winning the lottery.
However, it seems to be that there are success stories at least that is what the stock photo companies want you to believe. The stock photo companies will always have a hunger for new fresh photo’s from you to keep their business running. What they do is giving you hope because when you contribute for the first time you get a message that one of two of your images is sold and that you have earned 50 cents for each image. Which make you happy that somebody is interested in one your photos, peanuts of course but the time that you’re where properly paid for your photography are over.
But if you nevertheless against all opposition give it a try beware that the images you contribute must have the best quality, technical and artistic. Noise, unsharpness, too much underexposed, or over, or having a chromatic abbreviation or any other artifact problems like poor processed editing getting overlay grid on your image are not accepted. So, before to contribute expand your image to 100%-200% to be aware your image is sharp and have no dust and ensure whether you need an image release or property release form. Selling your images is all about quantity put all of your best photo’s to all the stock photo companies you know and spread your changes and grab as much as you can and make some extra income.
For example PicFair.com and 500px where I also contribute my pictures are maybe less strict for the quality and giving you more space to be creative in your way also they give you the chance to make your own price like PicFair does.
500px.com gives a price estimate on the 500px marketplace depending on the resolution of the image you contribute. Crowdpark.com mostly a website for citizens photojournalists can be worthwhile to check it out as well.
Thanks for reading this article I hope this article is worth reading, all comments are welcome especially from those who have other experiences with stock-photography.
When do you consider yourself a travel photographer?
Well NOT if you travel with friends or your wife even who have no clue about what your doing as a photographer while you spend a few considerable lot of money and bring your best camera ever with you on holiday, vacation, or an adventures trip trying take the best shot of your live on your way of your travel trip. It will be very annoying while your friends or wife waiting un patiently that you finally take the shot. you feel guilty and you cannot concentrate.
If your really want to be that travel photographer leave your wife at home and your best friend photographer who always tells you that you can take that photo better, travel alone and go to places where your always wanna to be solo. Or do like me stay single.
Choose your event, prepare your trip, joint a workshop?
Plan your travel destination well choose which moment of the year, look for national events or a festivals find out what is going on that particular country you like to visit. Check if your need a visa and is it save to go will it be an adventure travel or a cultural one. Book your hotel far in advance if you wanna be at a festival hotel prices gonna be up three times as much or even more or are fully booked at that moment of the event.
Most countries have their particular traditions people are dressed up in their color full national clothing and are happy you may take pictures of them at that national pride moment, avoid posting photo but take natural acting but If people ask you take picture of them just do it just for pleasing them you can always delete it later if it turn one of the ugliest
photo of you trip.
What photo gear to bring with you on your travel trip?
The most logical thought is light and easy to wear and should I bring my tripod or not. I recommend always bring your tripod if possible but be aware that a tripod is not allowed to bring it with you in to the cabin of your flight. Like your other gear bring it always with you don’t leave it never alone and keep a close eye on it during your flight and your travel. Use a photo bag with wheels , how often happened that you have to queue up in line and wait before you get trough immigration and with your photo gear on your back could it be very uncomfortable.
Once in your hotel make your preparation to be that travel photographer. One of the things you can do is book a local photo workshop if you can afford it just go ahead for it. The locals know how to get to right places the right times and to get there the workshop brings you to all the places of the events depending on the program often not only transportation is included but also lunch and drinks but every one can do it differently .What I do is if there is a website of a local workshop photographer and if there is I look at his program what he has to offer and follow his steps what he explain on his website and going my own way his way, depending in which country you are wether you go on public transport or what ever is available in that particular county , tuktuk, bike, motorbike ,bus, tram what ever…go to the event and places recommend by the local photographers workshop and enjoy your photography.
